Workplace Injuries

Workplace Injuries

Workplace injuries are injuries you sustain while completing work duties. These are also known as work-related musculoskeletal disorders or work-related musculoskeletal injuries. Occupational tasks usually involve a lot of upper body use. Thus, your hands, neck, shoulders, elbows and wrists are most likely to get injured at the workplace. However, it may also affect the feet, spine and back.

What are Common Types of Workplace Injuries?

There are three types of workplace injuries-

  • Muscle injuries

There are two reasons why you may suffer from workplace muscle injuries:

  • You use ligaments, muscles and tendons for tasks in awkward positions at the workplace
  • The work-related activities require frequent repetitive movement causing pain and injury

Does your job involve repetitive and uncomfortable body postures? Then you may be susceptible to work-related muscle disorders.

Occupations prone to work-related muscle injuries:

  • Maintenance
  • Janitorial services
  • Nursing
  • Office work
  • Truck Driving

The key to treating muscle injuries at the workplace is avoiding muscle strain while performing your duties. Physiotherapists recommend posture training, movement exercises and ergonomic risk factors to help relieve the condition.

  • Nerve injuries

Specific workplace injuries may damage your nerves too. The symptoms include tingling, pain, muscle weakness, numbness, lightheadedness, etc. These injuries cause chronic pain and limit your movement in everyday life.

Causes of workplace nerve injuries:

  • Slips and falls
  • Broken bones
  • Overexertion
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Fall from a height
  • Repetitive motions

Work-related nerve disorders can lead to other conditions such as Sciatica, shoulder injuries, rotator cuff injury, carpal tunnel, etc. It may take some time more than usual to heal these work-related injuries but recovery is possible.

  • Tendon injuries

Tendinitis and Tendinosis are the most common tendon injuries that occur in workplaces. The conditions affect the area in the joints of your wrists, shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle and hands.

Tendons connect bones and muscles. These are quite tough but not enough to sustain repeated overuse. Thus, you are most likely to injure your tendons if you repeat the same movement again and again at work. Tiny tears may develop in the tendons causing chronic pain and inflammation.

Common tendon injuries at work:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Ruptured tendons
  • Tennis elbow
  • Achilles tendon tears

What are the Symptoms of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders?

It is needless to say that pain is the most common symptom of workplace injuries. However, other symptoms of occupational injuries are:

  • Joint stiffness
  • Redness
  • Inflammation of the affected area
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Muscle tightness

How Does Physiotherapy Treat Occupational Injuries?

Physiotherapists use a wide array of approaches to treat different occupational injuries. They assess each injury individually to understand its severity and exact source. Here are the treatments they may recommend:

The physical therapists may recommend one treatment or a combination of two-three treatments, depending on your condition. However, all approaches aim at reducing your pain and restoring your well-being
