What are Custom Orthotics?

Foot orthotics are medical devices that you wear with your shoes to treat a wide range of foot problems. Custom orthotics are designed specifically for the muscles, bones and tendons of your feet. Wearing custom foot orthotics helps your lower legs and feet function at their highest potential. It often helps treat a wide range of conditions that affect the lower back, knees and hips by correcting foot abnormalities.

Are Custom-Made Orthotics Worth It?

Over-the-counter orthotics are available. But, they follow the ‘one size fits all’ approach. They are not crafted specifically for every patient. Custom foot orthotics, on the other hand, are made to address your foot issues and align your overall musculoskeletal system.

Feet forms the foundation for your overall physical structure. Once misaligned, it can affect your balance and cause pain in the ankle, hip, knee, lower back and legs. Customized orthotics re-align the foot and help manage your pain.

Orthotics not only reduce pain but also absorb shock while you walk or stand. They provide cushioning to the high arches, improve posture and help maintain balance.

Your foot structure may misalign due to various reasons. Injuries and aging are the two most common causes. You can also develop pain if you wear improperly fitting shoes, stay physically inactive or stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time.

How are Orthotics Made?

Our foot specialists assess your foot structure and analyze your gait pattern to prescribe the best foot orthotics. They take a 3D cast of your foot. There are several casting methods such as plaster slipper casting, laser scanning, foam box casting and wax moulding. All the methods capture the exact contours of your foot in their optimum functional state.

Are Custom Orthotics Covered By Insurance?

Custom foot orthotics are eligible for insurance coverage under two criteria:

  • They should be custom-made using the 3D casting of your affected foot.
  • An experienced healthcare professional should prescribe the device for a specific foot condition.

You should check with your provider if they allow other healthcare practitioners to prescribe the orthotics. However, orthotics for recreational activities or sports are usually not covered.

What to Expect From the First Appointment?

Our foot specialists assess your foot to make sure you get the best orthotics specifically for your condition. We evaluate your previous injuries and existing symptoms along with your medical history. Our goal is to understand the pressure your feet withstand every day and design an orthotic accordingly. So, we also take your lifestyle and daily footwear into consideration.

Then the team conducts physical tests to determine your overall posture, strength, alignment, structure and range of motion of your legs and feet. The tests also reflect how you walk. This helps the professional identify and treat any abnormalities in your movement patterns.

We proceed to prepare a 3D cast of your foot once we have all the information necessary to create one for you.

I had a great experience getting treated for a lower back injury here. My physiotherapist was incredibly knowledgeable, taking the time to explain exactly what was wrong and how we were going to fix it. The combination of hands-on treatment and targeted exercises made a massive difference in my pain levels. Excellent service!

I forgot the lady's name but she was totally clueless. I came in for dry needling and all she would do is pierce the skin and say "that should feel better now". Not once did I feel those needles go into my muscles. Left feeling worse then when I came in. Luckly I managed to get a appointment with my usual physiotherapist and her dry needling released all the knots in my shoulder in one session. There's probably good physiotherapists here but the one that I had should get her license removed. Also her attitude was very dismissive. Felt like she was doing the bare minimum just to take my money in the shortest amount of time.
